It seems like progressive (known to many as "artsy") is catching on in the smaller genres. A lot of metal, posthardcore, and screamo bands are embracing the more prog style and in my opinion that's amazing.
Bands like: Circle Takes The Square Dillinger Escape Plan Gospel The Locust (newer) The Mars Volta Blood Brothers (newer)
All of these bands seem to have an edge over other bands in similar genres simply becasue they take music seriously and put forth a great amount of effort when writing/playing/recording. The prog bands usually have bending, mathematical guitar work, overlapping drum beats, synth, etc.
If you can think of any other bands that fit in this category I'd love to know.

Dillinger was always miles ahead of all the other "noise/math" bands, and it bums me out that so many people shun their new album because if has "weirder" elements to it. I like the pop-hooks and the jazz licks in it. I don't listen to a whole lot of bands in this genre though, so I don't have much to add, but I think people need to do Dillinger justice and listen to the newest album. People who say Under The Running Board is their best are seriously retarted. That album has some of the weakest material ever. Calculating Infinity is easily their best, but Miss Machine is a close second.

gospel has always been good. but they didn't use to have the synthesizer/weird elements.
they got a synth player just for the new album. or not a new dude, but brought in the keys for the album, and use them live now. the old stuff (they had a split with kodan armada) it has 2 songs that were on 'the moon is a dead world' that sound incredibly good both ways. i think in the song 'congratulations... you've hit bottom.' sounded better with no keys, but the rest of that album is amazing!
