I noticed that Joy Division is one of those bands that never got as much acclaim as they actually deserved. I don't know how many people on here are familiar with them but I was just thinking about how grateful we should be that a band like this came along to revolutionize modern music.
Joy Division is partially responsible for rock's exploration of the darker, more emotional side of human existence. They focused their music on self-hatred, depression, and despair.
Also, if you notice a lot of the other bands to come out and produce something like this; bands like The Smiths, Bauhaus, and The Cure, there was always something 'extra' and that was the more theatrical/dramatic approach. No one could do what Joy Division did...
Everyone else just made things ridiculously bitter and angry or annoyingly whiney.

Joy Division's Substance was the soundtrack to every skate session I used to have with Billy Buford.
I used to have a cr00sh Bauhaus sticker that I got from some kid at the Louisville skatepark, but it got scraped off the bottom of my skateboard.
I love brooding dark 80s "Artfag" shit.

They're soooooo good, and let's be honest. With out bands like Joy Division the alt rock genre would have never happened and the same goes for goth and a lot of punk. Billy was in to some weird music lol, stuff I never would have expected him to listen to I.E. the locust, bright eyes, joy division, etc.

You guys should listen The Swans... that's some of the darkest, most unrelenting and menacing rock music I've ever heard.

He used to work at a record store fomr like 85-88 so he's got lots of cool shit. The best swans song (I can't remember the title) but's about killing cops.......it's really fucking heavy and really dark and the lyrics are just like "kill that fucking pig" or something like that.....

shane told me to check out swans, i like it a lot.
joy division is amazing, i have two joy division 12"s/lps. they're way good.
i heard ian curtis killed himself by tying piano wire around his neck, and then standing on a melting block of ice.
and as for joy division not getting the recognition they deserve, if any thing they get a lot more than needed as stupid journalists compare new bands to them when they probably haven't heard joy divison.

The way Ian Curtis killed himself is true. What's crazy is that I grew up with a kid named Ian Curtis....who's still alive. I think you're right though Cameron. Any band with any kind of "80's" sensibility almost automatically get's compared to Joy Division...I've heard journalists compare The Killers and fucking Modest Mouse to Joy Division...that's wack. Everyone tries to bank on 80's/vintage/old skool appeal...in everything now.

Well it's obvious bands like the Killers have TRIED to sound like Joy Division so I understand the comparison, even if they in no way compare. I've never actually heard Swans but I've had them suggested to me a couple of times. I'll check them out.

I truly enjoy Joy Division. Their music is definetely fun but slightly dark at the same time.
