So i was able to stream this and to be quite honest its not that great. They seem to have fallen into the artsy band trap, just take one look at the cover art and you can almost hear a bunch of kids fawning over how original and brilliant it is (it is neither). The music is more chaotic this time and the lyrics are more abstract. While Wes Eisold is an amazing lyricist, these are not his best. The songs themselves arent bad and maybe i just dig it because its the guy from american nightmare but in all reality it sounds like any other screamo record. To make a long story short though its not bad but if everyone in town heres it it will be hailed a masterpiece.
The bottom line- If you dig artsy music with cliche imagery and a sound that is reminiscent of the blood brothers mixed with (insert other screamo band) than you will dig some girls. for kids like me who dont like screamo whatsoever, its cool to hear more material from wes eisold (who i happen to think is one of our generations best lyricists).

yeah keith i agree with you on all of that. Take the show for example, what did we see. A bunch of kids with duckcuts falling all over eachother. Not one of the kids were really sing they just kind mumbled along with wes. Some girls is good but the new ep is pretty subpar. Imagine what the release on epitaph is going to be like.

I thought Give up the Ghost/A.N. had enough 'artsiness' to them. I mean some of those lyrics are more poetic than the shit I've had to read in my Trad. lit. class here. They were an amazing band, and I think they proved to many of the art-fart elitists that just because it's aggressive and hardcore-inspired doesn't mean that it can't be an artistic outlet, or has to convey messages besides straightedge and unity.
I think that Wes compromised way too much with this Some Girls album. Give up the ghost is like one of our generation's "crossover" bands...Some Girls is just trying to cater to the GSL/Tortuga demographic.
I think if I didn't know Wes's history I would like this band a lot more, but every time I hear them I can't get past it.

No, i think hes just going easy on himself. I mean screamo kids will think anythings brilliant so he can just write some subpar lyrics and get away with it. In his older bands, he had to actually work for it.

I've always had respect for this band but up until now I've never really 'liked' them. I've only heard "I Need Drugs" and "The DNA Will Have It's Say" though, but both were really good. American Nightmare and Give Up The Ghost were never favorites of mine, I thought they were both rather bland (not at all bad, just bland) but I think Wes' vocals mix well with Some Girls' overall sound. I really love the background vocals through out "The DNA Will Have It's Say" and I think they will begin to catch on soon, especially with this release.
To be honest I don't think they've become more sporadic or "artsy" (and if you're going to say you don't like it that they've become "artsy" get your head out of your ass, they've 'always' been like this, like it or not lol).
Personally I've always preffered 'screamo' over the more 'hardcore' stuff because hardcore seems to be a very restrictive genre with very boring structure. Most screamo (I say screamo, not 'noise') bands I come across usually have a more interesting orchestration to their songs, it might not be as blunt but that's what makes it interesting, you have to really listen to hear it. After you've made that connection every thing seems really different. Once you've got all of it down it's so damned good.
I don't think they've really 'changed', I just consider this an interesting progression, a step forward if you will.
The cover art is cool, but it's certainly not "brilliant". Personally I prefer this cover to their last but that's just me.
I'd really like to hear the entire album if anyone has it...
Dakota, quit being a moron. I've heard a story or two about you in the front, falling over as you mumble lyrics. Also, who the fuck cares what the kids dress like, does it really matter? You're so critical of others. You're always complaining about some trend or another bothering you but you never step back to look at yourself. You're following a trendy movement too whether you want to accept it or not, so is every one else. We all pick the shit we like and run with it. I don't see you inventing some new, innovative fashion/hairstyle. Just have fun and stop worrying about other people all the time. I'm not trying to start any thing with you so don't take it that way, just trying to make a point.

As far as a/n and gutg go, they were both lyrical based bands. The music was a bit different for hardcore at the time. Look back before them and youll see how original they truly were. Also look at all the bands theyve influenced today.
True hardcore is constantly evolving and getting better. Take Modern Life Is War and bands like Lion of Judah for examples. They are true examples that hardcore is still evolving both musically and lyrically. Those bands alone prove that the rules can definetely be broken. On the same note screamo to me is very stagnant, at least from what ive heard, and believe me ive heard a great deal. I hang out with Cameron. lol. Oh well, opinions are like assholes...
Some Girls were indeed artsy from the beginning but they seemed to be more original when they started. By the way, the artwork for "all my friends are going death" was amazing, it blows the new work away. At least in my opinion it does. Also the first 7"s and the cd were better because you could clearly hear the influences from each of the members other projects. The music was very organic and seemed to be more interesting. Now they just kind of sound like everything else.
Anyways the new stuff isnt bad but go back and listen to the older stuff and i think youll see what i mean.

Good thing Wes screams his lyrics in to a microphone...if he wrote them down and sold them in a book or sang them while strumming an acoustic guitar he'd have a totally different fanbase, huh?
I sat down and read all of the lyrics he had written, every band and every album. I can see why some would be let down by this new album but if you follow the bands because of the man's words it would seem you'd be happy either way. He's quite the writer (though his vocals can be kind of weak in my opinion) but I noticed that up until this point (the new album) all of the lyrics have been nearly identical so I'd have to assume he just wants to try something new...maybe what he's doing isn't new to you or me but obviously he's not writing a song for you or me.
If you're a fan I suppose you'll be happy to follow this guy for the remaining years...I mean I'd guess he'll either end up totally fucked up from the drugs or dead and I'm excited to see what he comes up with in that time.
If only drugs didn't leave the users retarded/dead.

Of course he would have a different fanbase, he played hardcore so it obviously appealed mostly to kids who dug hardcore. A lot of his lyrics towards the end became redundant, but that happens to most writers after a while. It seems possibly that he exorcised his demons regarding the subject he was previously writing about. While he is moving on, his new lyrics are just completely unimaginative and drab. I dont see how people can say hes taking a step in the right direction. Oh well, if the passions not there, neither is the substance. To sum it up, I dont see Wes being very passionate about Some Girls, and this is reflected in his interviews. I will always follow his work because I can honestly say it has helped me personally. |
